About Parys
Parys is the gateway to the Vredefort Dome, an area that has been awarded World Heritage Site status. This status is awarded to areas of historical or ecological importance. There are very few World Heritage Sites in South Africa, and that lends a true sense of importance to the Vredefort Dome. The area also boasts big 5 game reserves, lodges and historically important archaeological sites. Parys was named by the town’s German surveyor, who named it after Paris, France, due to the similarity between the Vaal River and the River Seine, which flows through Paris. It is a beautiful town that offers a wide variety of leisure activities. It is also a very popular weekend destination for people from Gauteng.
Tourists, local and international, already come to Parys for: The American Saddle Horse Arena, the largest of its kind in the Southern hemisphere. Adventure facilities such as hiking, river rafting, mountain biking, fly-fishing, 4X4 trails and quad biking.
The "Dome Adventure Festival" held annually on the first weekend in November, which draws at least 12 000 visitors. The annual Arts and Antiques fair.
The town offers a selection of hotels, guesthouses and campsites from where visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, bird-watching and boating.
